April is Screenwriting Month

Big Sleep vs. Big LebowskiAmong many other designations. Please sign up to write your screenplay here.

I am working on my football novel so the screenplay will have to wait until next year. But if you need a pep talk I love being distracted.

Wtf do I do with this sh*t?

Moving twice in six months is a good way to get to know yourself. Maybe. Or know your stuff. The following are visual trivia items, please answer in the comments the title question.

do you think those guys who mugged me on Vanderbilt need the ipod charger? What is all this? Can i throw it out?

Um how about this metal box my dad gave me? It is at least 106 years old, but that does not make it useful to me. What do I do? See how it’s sitting on ANOTHER metal box my dad gave me? Which relative of ours was in the Williams College Dramatic Club in 1905? Does anyone care?

Metal boxes are heavy!

Or: Books. I have very few books. But I do have this one? Why? Because my dear former employer was going to throw it out. Read the inscription. It’s a Newbery Medal winner. I couldn’t.

oh bpl. sigh.

How about clothes?

given to me by a creepy yet talented patron who asked me who my favorite superhero was. Space Ghost, naturally. And then he spelled my name in books.

Special Agent Cooper/ Divination Methods

I think you can tell by the way I have a blog and am a librarian that I am a huge nerd. And also, since I was raised by hipsters and happened to be entering eighth grade when it came on TV, I was a raging Twin Peaks fan and hosted viewing parties in my house for my friends. My mother bought me saddle shoes. I still can’t believe the show was on regular TV. So I was pleased to see this very nerdly post on Agent Cooper’s Divination Methods.
Now I just need a problem. Ha!

Acupuncture

It was lovely. Very relaxing. There was a handsome corgi named Gus who guarded the door while I had my treatment- I was treated mainly for “work related anxiety” and I felt like a warm, calm and efficient sea creature for 24 hours. Isn’t this diagram interesting? Oh internet, what don’t you have?

Moving Day

Thanks to Carina for not getting mad when I crushed her foot with Great Aunt Frances’ glass top desk. Luckily, future generations will not have to worry about things like this because IKEA furniture can contractually only be moved three times before imploding. And I’m pretty sure the family heirloom desk is not going back down the twisting stairway.

It really made me miss the New York City crew who always made moving a low impact side activity to a really great Bloody Mary and bagel brunch party. You guys are great. Especially the ones who showed up just for bagels. I respect that. I’ll post photos of the new place soon.

Soup Dumplings

I want to eat them. If I were to happen to be in Flushing this weekend around lunch time are there any of you people who would meet me here?

The Witches of Eastwick by John Updike

Not to alarm my tender readers but since I arrived on the North Shore I have been quite aware of some supernatural forces at work. I have not (yet) summoned any thunderstorms. But I believe the women here to be perfectly capable of it. Luckily they put their powers to work for good, mostly, and they are no longer chaffing under the restraints of the 60s where Updike sets his tale.

He writes like a precise and joyful machine. The descriptions of New England are the most apt I’ve ever read, especially the plants and buildings. But despite giving this tale a strong engine and totally fascinating characters, gruesome murders, orgies, etc.- nothing particularly happens for Alexandra, the head witch. She watches the action and then in the last couple pages, marries and moves back out west. They all remarry. The events of the book turn out to be just a boring winter’s entertainment for the witches. Even their friendship, their coven, proves transient- something they needed during their divorce but easily discarded.
