Sustainable Travel in 2014

So very much has happened since I posted here! Deadblogs abound with failed New Year’s resolutions and I’d like to reboot this one as a place for my travel writing. My resolution is to dig in to the five boroughs and all those places we can reach via public transport and bike and, what the hell, boat!
For many years, like so many of my demographic, I have had running lists of places all around the world I would like to visit. The ubiquitous “Bucket List” phenomenon. Whenever I have a bad day or week I start daydreaming about boarding the Queen Mary and heading off to Europe with my bicycle for an Adventure. Somehow, the sun is always shining and I am always in a good mood and never lost or lonely on these adventures. What would it be like to dig in to New York and the local region in this way? What if we rode our bikes up the Connecticut coast instead of crying about not being in the South of France RIGHT NOW?!?

Of course the worst part of my carbon footprint is air travel. I have two extremely extravagant trips planned for this winter, and then I would like to take a year off from flying and see how it feels. Can I get the same joy from wineries in the finger lakes as in France? I bet I can…

Camping on Fire Island
Camping at Sandy Hook, Gateway National Recreation Area, NJ
Albany, NY Bike and Brewery Tour
