It is growing. Last winter the city tree never came to leaf. Of course, even spending an extra thirty seconds on our block, looking at the space and thinking of improvements changes it. For a while our public trash cans were disappearing but we’ve held on to two since January. A surprising number of our neighbors smoke and every time I pluck a butt from the tree pit I am doing penance for my teenage smoking. Where did I think the butts thrown from a moving car went?
I think the most powerful act is to visibly care for our street, a few square feet at a time. And happily the city thinks so too.
